MAME Coffee - Zurich, Switzerland
MAME, which means “beans” in Japanese, is a Swiss roastery founded in Zurich in 2016 by Emi Fukahori and Mathieu Theis. Together they have built a global reputation for precise roasting, high-quality sourcing, and a thoughtful approach to hospitality. With their backgrounds in competition coffee, both founders have earned international recognition, including Swiss and World Brewers Cup championships as well as strong performances on the World Barista stage. That experience informs their roasting today. Over the years MAME has grown into several cafe locations in Zurich and Geneva, and most recently launched KURO MAME in Tokyo, an innovative Omakase-style cafe with no menu where coffees are chosen through conversation between barista and guest.
We have admired MAME for years for both their consistency and their evolving story in specialty coffee. At World of Coffee Geneva 2025, by a happy coincidence, we ran into Mathieu at a MAME shop. We immediately connected over our shared vision of hospitality and exchanged thoughts about the growing coffee scene in Asia. Hearing about their Tokyo cafe directly from him left us inspired, and we are eager to experience it ourselves.
For us, MAME represents more than award-winning coffee. They embody a spirit of curiosity, connection, and care. We are honored to feature their coffees here at Rikka Fika and to share in their journey.
